How to Use a TIG Torch?
TIG torches are used to perform TIG welding, which is only one type of welding.
For the most part, TIG is used to weld titanium copper and can even be used to weld two dissimilar metals. Many professional and DIY welders use TIG to make tricky welds such as s-curves or welds on round items. Some of the easiest steps to use a TIG torch are listed below:
Step 1: Choose the Electrode
In most instances, your TIG will already have the right electrode in it. If not, for aluminum, the best option will be a pure tungsten rod.
Step 2: Grind the Electrode
If your tungsten rod doesn’t already have a point or rounded tip, be sure to grind it to a point. Creating a pointed tip will provide a smaller, more directed arc.
Step 3: Insert the Electrode into the collet
Unscrew the back of the electrode holder and insert the rod. Focus on keeping the electrode about ¼” away from its protective sheath.
Step 4: Choose the settings
If you’re using aluminum, choose “AC” from the options available.
Next, you’ll set the “cleaning/penetrating” setting toward the more “penetrating” side. Usually, seven on a scale from 1 to 10 works well. Set the “Air on” to the 5-second mark if your machine allows for this. (It indicates the time the gas stays on after the arc has stopped and keeps your weld from rusting).
Step 5: Switch on the gas
Choosing the right gas will prevent the weld from getting corroded as metal rusts, and aluminum oxidizes. If you’re using aluminum, you need to use pure argon. For steel, you should use a carbon dioxide & argon mixture.
Step 6: Prepare your welding table & metal
Here you’ll need a large metallic area to allow electricity to flow through your metal. Experts suggest using a welding table or a large piece of sheet meat. The only real criteria here is that the table or sheet lies flat. Clamp your metals to keep them steady when you weld.
Step 7: Dress the Part
Using TIG torches causes burns, so it’s crucial to wear all the necessary safety gear. Here you’re looking at a leather apron, closed-toed shoes, a long-sleeved shirt and leather welding gloves, and a welding helmet. Step 8: When you’re ready, start welding
When your preparations are complete, hold the electrode about one inch away from the metal.
Press down on the foot pedal so that you can easily get a surge of current and heat into the metal. Start on an edge and when a liquid pool has formed, touch the rod in. This creates a “tack weld,” which essentially holds the metal in place so you can loosen the clamps and create longer, more durable welds.
